Life Update: Life and, of course, books!

As my connected Facebook page to this blog likes to keep reminding me, I haven’t posted anything in awhile. I have been feeling under the weather the past few weeks and finally dragged myself to the doctor and found out I had a sinus infection. Yippee. So they gave me an antibiotic. But, I cannot eat anything within an hour before or after taking the antibiotic, so that caused some issues when I went to work this week. I started getting nauseous and light headed when I didn’t eat an hour before, so I had to change up my morning routine and wake up earlier. 😐 five days of antibiotics later, I feel much better overall and I’m back on my exercise train.

I also got a little burnt out on reading ARCs and posting long reviews that I decided to take a break and start tackling my embarrassing long TBR list (see one of my first three posts about my book buying addiction). So, since my last post, I have read four books that I gave 4 star or above reviews on Goodreads.

First up was Playing With Fire by the beautiful Gena Showalter. I have been a HUGE fan of Gena’s ever since I picked up the first Lords of the Underworld book about 9-10 years ago (The Darkest Night btw). She has so many amazing series that have kick ass heroines and strong, brooding alpha makes (*swoons*) and just all around great storylines! Playing With Fire was actually a rerelease when I got it and I have NO IDEA how I hadn’t read this one yet! 😱 But now I can say I have and I have a new male character crush. Helloooo Rome! 🀀 ahem, anyways. This one got 5 stars from me for pure sass, humor, awesome powers, and of course, Mr. Hott Stuff (Rome!). πŸ€— what can I say? I am sooooo a sucker for an alpha male book character.

Next up was Feels Like Home by Evelyn Adams. Now this books, I probably bought during a Goodreads or BookBub daily deal sometime ago because it was cheap and the story intrigued me. But, I never got around to reading it due to my depression/book slump and book buying addiction that just kept pushing it to the pile of my TBR list. So, over the past few months, I started putting together a database of all the books I owned and then compiled a list of the books I have not read yet (alphabetically by author’s last name of course πŸ˜‹). My goal was to start at the top and work my way through my embarrassing long list and then mix in my book club and must reads in between. Feels Like Home was at the top of the list and I can now say I have finished it! Also, this was a cute little slice of life story with one of those unrealistic romantic scenarios. But I enjoyed the story and the characters, and I gave this one 4 stars on Goodreads. I also plan on getting into the rest of the series once I’ve knocked down my TBR list a bit. Maybe by 100 books or so. πŸ€ͺ

Next I picked up The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert. This was another unknown author to me and I had added the book to my Goodreads list earlier this year, deciding to wait responsibly for the book to go on sale before buying it. TRUE STORY! I think a couple month ago, it went on a daily deal, so of course I had to get it! (Book buying addiction…damn you daily deals!) This one was the second in my alphabetical list. Now, I have read some mixed reviews of this book and I was a little worried. BUT! I honestly loved this book and the creepy fairy tales and the Alice in Wonderland feel to the story! I gave it 4 stars on Goodreads, mainly because I had a hard time connecting with the main character Alice in the beginning and I felt the ending tied up too many loose ends for the supposed sequels. Not sure what will happened in the next books, but I’m kind of curious!

The last book I read (and finished in July 31st) was Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen. This books I randomly found searching Goodreads and it intrigued me. I kept putting off buying it though until I found it on BookOutlet.com for super cheap!! Seriously friends, if you haven’t checked out Bookoutlet.com, you’re seriously missing out on some awesome deals! I picked up this book and quite a few others (I can’t help myself! I love books!) and added them to my massive TBR list. This one was number 3 alphabetically. (I won’t state this anymore…it’ll get hard to keep track of eventually.) Garden Spells had a very Southern Practical Magic feel to it, but I really enjoyed the story. It was a quick read and I enjoy slice of life books. My only complaint is that sometimes the point of view would switch unexpectedly without a chapter or a natural storyline break, and that’s kind of a pet peeve of mine when stories are told from multiple views. I did give this one 4 stars and totally plan on picking up the sequel First Frost hopefully from my local library or a daily deal. Whichever comes first. πŸ€—

I am about to start another Sarah Addison Allen book, The Girl Who Chased the Moon and I’m really excited to start this one, mainly because the title intrigued me in addition to the description. Also, this cover is GORGEOUS! I got this one in one of my BookOutlet hauls.

So that is what has been up with me the past few weeks! I want to at least post a couple times a month and the ambitious part of me would love to do this once a week. But let’s get serious here. I would get obsessive about posting and stress myself out and probably get depressed or overwhelmed by needing to post, so I am just going to keep my posts when I can. It’s better for everyone this way, believe me. 😜

So, until next time!! Happy August and Happy Reading!!

All images used in this post are not mine and I got them off Google Images.

  1. I,too, have The Hazel Wood book in my goodreads list. I’m sorry if you’ve been feeling under the weather but it sounds like you are on the road to recovery. I may add a few of these books to my to be read list. It just seems like that list grows longer each year with books that I need to read :).
