A magic cupcake. A culinary killer. The perfect recipe for murder.

Wren knew her sweet treats could work wonders, but she never knew they could work magic. She barely has time to wrap her head around the stunning revelation when the head of the prestigious Confectioner’s Guild falls down dead before her. Poisoned by her cupcake.

Now facing murder charges in a magical world she doesn’t understand, Wren must discover who framed her or face the headsman’s axe. With the help of a handsome inspector and several new friends, Wren just might manage to learn the ropes, master her new powers, and find out who framed her. But when their search for clues leads to a deep-rooted conspiracy that goes all the way to the top, she realizes that the guild master isn’t the only one at risk of death by chocolate.

If Wren can’t bring the powerful culprit to justice, she and her friends will meet a bittersweet end.

My Thoughts

When we first meet Wren, we see a young woman who has shut out the world and only expresses herself through her confections. Very quickly after we are introduced, Wren is pulled abruptly from her comfortably safe environment into the political mess of guild life.

She has a gift? Can she trust these people? Uh-oh, the Guild master died. What? She’s been accused of murdering a man she just met?

Wren is forced to jump through hurdles of politics, romance, rivalries, mystery, and trust while trying to clear her name of the murder she didn’t commit.

I really enjoyed the array of character’s that the author presented to us. I cannot pick one that I enjoyed more than another; they all had traits I enjoyed.

I also enjoyed the fact that each guild has it’s own special Gift-set that connected to the essence of the guild itself.

I actually highlighted a quote that made me smile, which I never do. Highlight that is. 😜That quote is “She folded the paper and tucked it in the bosom of her dress, wishing, not for the first time, that the gown had pockets. That would be priority number one in dress-buying from now on. Pockets.” Seriously, how relatable is the wanting of pockets for a woman these days? And this was in a fantasy world where woman are still wearing dresses and are required a male family member’s permission to be married.

In Conclusion

A few months ago, I had never heard of Claire Luana. I had signed up for a book giveaway that I think she had sponsored or was a part of where I had to sign up for her newsletter. Now, I am very happy that I clicked that button (even though I didn’t win the giveaway). By clicking that button, it connected me with an author I probably wouldn’t have otherwise found . Clicking that button lead me to The Confectioner’s Guild and I am very happy to have read this book.

The Confectioner’s Guild is the first book of The Confectioner’s Chronicles. This book was just a fun read and I will definitely be picking up the next book, The Confectioner’s Coup when it comes out on November 19, 2018.

I give The Confectioner’s Guild 5 stars for great characters and a fun story (and an explicit description of chocolate!!!)!
