Book Review: Shadow and Ice ~ Gena Showalter

*Deep Breath in* GUYS!!! Gena Showalter’s new book is AMAZING!

Okay, seriously, I’m not trying to be biased. You all know I’m a huge fan of Gena’s and I am in love with her books and her personality. But, that has nothing to do with my review of Shadow and Ice 🙂 Okay, almost nothing. Gena Showalter is an amazing person and I can’t help but rave on her and her writing. 😉

I was able to snag a signed copy of this baby through Cratexpectation, a new book subscription service that caters to different reading genres and ages. I am utterly impressed with the customer service of this company (not so much with USPS) and I highly recommend if you have some extra cash to give this subscription a go 🙂

For $29.99 plus shipping and tax, I got a beanie hat with the Lords of the Underworld butterfly on it, a chocolate scented candle, a cute manicure set, an adorable fabric & charm bookmark, some boot socks, and of course a signed paperback copy of Shadow and Ice. I would have preferred a hardback edition, but beggars can’t be choosers and I’m just happy to add a signed book to my collection 🙂

Knox of Iviland has spent his life competing in the All Wars, where vicious warriors with supernatural powers fight to the death to claim new realms. One winner takes everything—and all losers die. Enslaved as a child for his ability to control shadows, the most ruthless champion in history will stop at nothing to kill his king. But first he must win the battle for Earth. When a fearsome weapon imprisons every combatant in ice, centuries pass without progress…until she walks in.

Vale London craves a fun arctic getaway with her foster sister before settling down to open a bakery. Street-tough but vulnerable, she is unprepared to find ancient gods escaping a frozen cave—merciless beings who target her when she inadvertently enters their war.

Though Vale is now his enemy, Knox is consumed with lust and a fierce need to protect her. But only one combatant can prove victorious, and he will have to choose: live for freedom, or die for love.

Knox + Vale + a war between a ton of immortal warriors for the rights to Earth (aka, Terra) = a kick ass story with a romantic twist. Okay, more than a twist. Perhaps a nice glaze. 😛

I’ve read a few other reviews that stated that the story line was slow and introduced way too many characters to begin with. That’s their opinion and I disagree.

I feel that Shadow and Ice, being the first book of the new Gods of War series, gives a good introduction to all of the necessary characters. When reading through the book, I found it handy that certain characters were introduced earlier on and didn’t need their intro in the midst of a battle during the climax of the novel.

Being from Oklahoma (northeastern), I found myself relating to Vale and her sister Nola. Granted, I didn’t have a hard life in the foster system like the two sisters, but I have ALWAYS enjoyed when Gena gives her characters an Okie background. Added to that, they’re from Strawberry Valley (where her Original Heartbreakers series takes place)! Eek!!!

I found myself enjoying how Vale grew into her “gifts” and was able to get Knox to see that love and friendship is not necessarily a weakness.

For me, my love for Gena’s series have always been about the story line and not the romantic or erotic aspect. There is quite a bit of sex in this book, but if that bothers you, just skim through those parts. The story line itself is pretty awesome minus those scenes.

In Conclusion

5 Stars! Will definitely read again! I love the other realms aspect. I love the  mythological twist. And I wholeheartedly look forward to the next book in the series! Give this one a shot if you’re into paranormal romance!
